More About Me ...
*From Hong Kong to Vancouver: My Love Story with Adlerian Psychology*
In 2010, I relocated from Hong Kong to Vancouver with my two children. At that time, the name Alfred Adler was unfamiliar to me—until 2012, when I encountered Positive Discipline and was introduced to this pioneering figure who profoundly influenced modern psychology.
Initially, I picked up The Courage to Be Disliked simply to better understand Positive Discipline, but it unexpectedly sparked an intellectual revolution. Adler’s theories shone like a beacon, illuminating my past confusion about relationships and parenting—revealing that children’s “misbehavior” stems from a longing for belonging, while parental anxiety often arises from an obsession with “perfect parenting.”
Over more than a decade of leading parenting workshops, I’ve witnessed countless families transformed by Adler’s concepts like Gemeinschaftsgefühl (community feeling) and task separation. One mother once said through tears, “I finally understand—when I stopped battling with my child over ‘who’s right,’ we truly began to communicate.” Moments like these convinced me that Adlerian psychology isn’t cold theory, but a practical philosophy that illuminates everyday life.
Today, Adler’s wisdom has become the language of my life. It has taught me:
– “Parenting isn’t about sculpting a masterpiece, but nurturing a seed—you provide the soil, but the growth belongs to the child.”
– “Moving isn’t just a geographical shift, but a transformation in perspective. In Hong Kong, I chased efficiency; in Vancouver, I learned to ‘slow down and listen.'”
– “True parenting begins with embracing imperfection and culminates in witnessing a child’s courage to face adversity.”
My eldest son now lives in Hong Kong as a commercial airline pilot, while my younger daughter is pursuing her medical degree in the United States. My husband and I split our time between Hong Kong and Vancouver.
