My friends, family and visitors to my counselling sessions all agree that I have a personality trait of being a good listener and understanding of their company. Perhaps this has something to do with my upbringing and life experiences, which allow me to perceive their hidden feelings underneath the surface. As George Dieter said in his book ‘I Power: The Freedom to be Me’, ‘In interpersonal interactions, it’s not the person you’re in contact with, it’s their defences’. I believe that true companionship is not just about physical presence, but also about spiritual connection. When we are able to let go of our defences and genuinely listen to another person’s story, a deeper connection is established. This connection not only allows others to feel understood and supported, but also allows me to grow in the process.
